Wide range of wedding venues rental fees.
A study of wedding costs included an interview with over ten-thousand couples. They were asked what they spend on wedding ceremony venues, just the cost of leasing a physical space. The answer: the average cost of a regular wedding venue, in 2023, in the United States, was a little over $12,000, which was approximately 40% of the total cost of the wedding event.
Please note that $12,000 was an average figure, meaning there were many below that and many over that figure. In truth, it is possible to rent a wedding venue for as little as $500, and it is possible to rent one which will cost you $20,000 or more. The cost of any venue will depend upon location, availability, popularity, and size.
Is the rental price negotiable? During the peak wedding season, when demand is high, negotiating a better price is close to impossible. During the off-season, when demand is low, it is possible. Note, we did not say likely, but it is possible.
Surcharges, hidden fees, and secondary costs.
Read your rental contract carefully. It is not unusual for wedding venues to have hidden fees and surcharges written into the contract. To protect yourself, ask for all inclusive pricing, which basically means the price agreed upon is the price paid, no hidden charges allowed.
And then, of course, we have the secondary costs i.e. entertainment at the reception, food, decorations, and incidentals, linens, tables, chairs, etc. Remember, we said the $12,000 figure was 40% of the final cost, meaning the average wedding cost in the neighborhood of $30,000.
Work the system to your advantage.
By this point in the discussion, you should be feeling your blood pressure rise just a bit. $30,000 is a huge investment. True, this is a “once in a lifetime” event but still, thirty grand will set most people back a bit, starting their wedding years off with a major debt.
How to mitigate that debt? Adopt a DIY attitude. Handle the decorating yourself. Handle the food prep yourself. Find friends who will provide entertainment. Rent a flexible location, like Tarrant Event Center, which can double as a wedding venue and a reception venue, thus saving thousands of dollars.
There is money which can be saved by simply being unwilling to accept that status quo. DIY can save you thousands of dollars, dollars which will not hang over you in debt during those early years of married bliss.
