Is there a more important event in your life than your wedding? Perhaps the birth of child is the only life event more important, or more memorable, than your wedding. It would be a shame, then, if that wedding were ruined because you were not aware of the legalities you face when signing a rental contract.
It’s time for a crash course.
Who is liable for what in wedding venues?
A guest trips and falls on a crack in the pavement. Said guest sues you, the person who rented the wedding venue. Another guest trips over cables from music amplifiers, breaking an arm, and sues you, the person who rented the wedding venue. Shall we continue? Are you liable in those two examples and, if not you, who?
The quick answer: almost all event room rental/wedding venues will carry liability insurance to cover accident caused by their property; however, there are incidences which can occur which are not covered by that liability insurance. Bottom line: it is always a good idea for you, the renter, to purchase short-term event insurance. Better safe than sorry is always the motto to live by when renting a venue for any occasion.
Government permits.
Event space rental permits, permits for food preparation, permits for beverage serving, permits for the capacity of a venue, and on and on we go, and the bottom line is most people are not aware of any of those permits and the necessity of each. If you are lucky, the venue management can inform you of what you will need. It should be stated in the rental contract. However, there is often a wide gap between “should be” and “actually is.”
When in doubt, hire a lawyer.
We are serious about this, so pay attention: if you have any doubt in your mind about liabilities or legal requirements, call a lawyer and have them advise. Yes, you are going to pay a couple hundred dollars to have a lawyer read that contract, but it is money well-spent if it saves you thousands later on.
Listen, and we are not being facetious when we say this, weddings are expensive. You might as well pay a little extra for sound legal advice; that way, the rest of your wedding experience will be pleasant, memorable, and safe from legal issues.
